Cabaret Room: Back On Boogie Street with GAY MARSHALL – songs of Leonard Cohen, 7:00pm

May 31 2022, 7:00 pm-8:30 pm

$25

In “Back on Boogie Street” Gay Marshall interprets a selection of Leonard Cohen’s exquisite songs and poetry ranging from his first album in 1966 to his last in 2016. Unlike most portraits of Cohen, this tribute reveals his surprising sense of humor, along with his spellbinding poetic genius.

Gay Marshall starred in A Chorus Line on Broadway and as Grizabella in the French production of Cats. Her solo show, If I Were Me…was voted #2 On The Fringe at the Edinburgh Festival. Marshall’s show about the French icon, Edith Piaf – La Vie l’Amour – played the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, Dayton’s Victory Theater and Missouri Rep. Other credits: The Baker’s Wife at Goodspeed, Papermill Playhouse, York Theatre; Zipper Theater’s revival of Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well… as well as a number of shows in Europe. Gay has recorded three CDs: Go Back Where You Stayed Last Night a selection of 20’s and 30’s blues, Gay Marshall sings Piaf: La Vie L’Amour, and Back On Boogie Street – songs of Leonard Cohen

“Gay Marshall’s remarkable show “Back on Boogie Street – Songs of Leonard Cohen”, is a wonderfully successful tribute. She displays her enthusiasm for his work not only in her irresistible performances of the songs, but in her informative patter and the poems she scatters throughout the evening, delivering them with the same passion and wit with which she sings the songs. … I would lay down money that a number of these interpretations will prove to be definitive.” Gerry Geddes BISTRO AWARDS

“Heartbreakingly exquisite…. Passion and spirituality. Cynicism and hope. I recommend that one should attend Gay Marshall’s ‘Back On Boogie Street’ at Pangea.” Melody Breyer-Grell CABARET SCENES

“She combusts with joy. There are no half measures: Marshall performs with soul and conviction reaching in through our sweaters and defenses, stilling and affecting us all.”  Alix Cohen WOMAN AROUND TOWN

“As the best cabaret and theatrical singers do, she lives the songs. Because of that, we follow her willingly.” Jon Sobel BLOGCRITICS

“To say that Marshall’s crystalline, endlessly mutable mezzo-soprano vocals are disarmingly direct is an understatement. Artifice is not a part of what she does.” Delarue  NEWYORKMUSICDAILY
